MATHSM: medial axis transform toward high speed machining of pockets
نویسندگان
چکیده
The pocketing operation is a fundamental procedure in NC machining. Typical pocketing schemes compute uniform successive offsets or parallel cuts of the outline of the pocket, resulting in a toolpath with C discontinuities. These discontinuities render the toolpath quite impractical in the context of high speed machining (HSM). This work addresses and fully resolves the need for a C continuous toolpath in HSM and offers MATHSM, a C continuous toolpath for arbitrary C continuous pockets. MATHSM automatically generates a C continuous toolpath that consists of primarily circular arcs while maximizing the radii of the generated arcs and, therefore, minimizing the exerted radial acceleration. MATHSM is especially suited for machining of elongated narrow pockets. q 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Toward 5-axis High Speed Machining
We present a scheme to construct C1 continuous toolpath for 5-axis pocketing of high speed machining. A continuous toolpath synthesis is proposed, that forms out circular segments of maximally inscribed sizes and linear segments connecting these circular segments. Extending earlier work that employed the Medial Axis Transform to compute these maximally inscribed circles for 2D planar pockets, t...

This paper describes an efficient method to find the lowest cost tool sequence for rough machining free-form pockets on a 3-axis milling machine. The free-form pocket is approximated to within a predefined tolerance of the desired surface using series of 2.5-D layers of varying thicknesses that can be efficiently removed with flat-end milling cutters. A graph-based method finds an optimal seque...
متن کاملOptimization of 5-axis high-speed machining using a surface based approach
This paper deals with optimization of 5-axis trajectories in the context of high-speed machining. The objective is to generate tool paths suited to high speed follow-up during machining in order to respect cutting conditions while ensuring the geometrical conformity of the machined part. For this purpose, the optimization of the tool axis orientations is performed using a surface model for the ...
متن کاملKinematic modelling of a 3-axis NC machine tool in linear and circular interpolation
Machining time is a major performance criterion when it comes to high speed machining. CAM software can help in estimating that time for a given strategy. But in practice, CAM programmed feed rates are rarely achieved, especially where complex surface finishing is concerned. This means that machining time forecasts are often more than one step removed from reality. The reason behind this is tha...
